Landscape Chinese Scroll Painting – Silk Wall Art – Red Maple Seal Boat

The red maple seal boat theme is the heart of this landscape scroll painting, and it beats steadily. Washed color and line work together here, neither one crowding the other out. Among pieces of chinese silk scroll painting, this is the quiet kind: balanced, calm, and easy to live with.

A fisherman's boat bobs in the foreground, anchoring the scene in daily life. The painter uses mist as a veil, revealing the mountains in stages. Layered mountains rise through the composition, their forms softened by distance. Characters in flowing script share the silk with the painting, as tradition demands. The red maple adds a quiet accent, handled in the old manner of the brush. Falling water provides the one note of motion in an otherwise still world. The seal's red square is the picture's quiet exclamation point.

It keeps good company with the finest timeless asian wall art, the kind that rewards daily looking. Give it wall space and it will repay the attention many times over. A thoughtful present for anyone starting a collection.
