Landscape Chinese Scroll Painting – Silk Wall Art – Seal Boat

Unroll this landscape scroll painting and the seal boat theme opens out in classical form. The painter trusts suggestion over statement, letting the viewer complete the picture. It belongs with the best of feng shui home decor, the sort that settles into a room from day one.

Text and image answer each other here, the calligraphy echoing the painting's mood. Tiny boats dot the river, each one a few strokes of the brush. A carved seal in red ink marks the work as the artist's own. Solid and unhurried, the mountains give the picture its spine. Mist gathers between the ridges, softening everything it touches. The water is left mostly blank, silk standing in for the river's surface. The waterfall's descent gives the picture its movement and its music. Old pines, emblems of steadfastness, hold their ground along the ridge. High in the scroll, the red sun burns quietly.

It keeps good company with the finest ink wash painting, the kind that rewards daily looking. Hang it, live with it, and watch it grow on you month by month. One hook and it is up; the scroll hangs straight from day one.
