Landscape Chinese Scroll Painting – Silk Wall Art – Hill Sailboat

This landscape scroll painting renders the hill sailboat theme with the poise of the old masters. The brush moves at an unhurried pace, and the picture shows it. Among pieces of elegant chinese wall scroll, this is the quiet kind: balanced, calm, and easy to live with.

Against the silk ground, the sailboat reads clearly at any distance. Characters in flowing script share the silk with the painting, as tradition demands. One or two red seals punctuate the composition, as custom requires. The green appears as a small pleasure of the composition, easily missed and worth finding. Drawn with economical strokes, the tree keeps the scene grounded and honest. The artist lets the house speak plainly, without ornament or excess. The hill settles naturally into the scene, balanced against the larger forms. The artist lets the village speak plainly, without ornament or excess. The river reflects nothing and suggests everything, in the classical manner.

It keeps good company with the finest timeless asian wall art, the kind that rewards daily looking. For the newcomer, it is a gentle doorway into the classical tradition. Try it where you take your tea; it belongs there.
